about

Premiered by Elizabeth Alker on BBC Radio 3's "Unclassified", this textural triptych is a meditation on the role of trust in relationships; not only our relationships with each other but also in our relationship with the earth.

Taken from Josh Semans' debut album "...And the Birds Will Sing at Sunrise", to be released in 2020.

In each section, the ondes Martenot is a prominent voice; initially disguised by manipulation and processing, the pure tones of the ondes are then heard through the métallique speaker (a gong, to which a speaker driver is attached). Finally, the ondes, heard in perhaps its most recognisable sonic form, soars over the piano to close the piece.

“Trust”, and the album from which it is taken, have a very strong visual connection with the scenery of Reynisfjara, in Iceland. The black sands, monolithic geology, and expansive waters of this area are the sole focus of the music video for “Trust”, shot by Semans and edited by Mark Lamin. Hand-drawn by Jonathan Lamin, the artwork for this single is an important part of the visual identity of this music, connecting it to the music video and the, as of yet, unreleased album. The image of the firmly anchored rock, rooted in the volcanic sands of Reynisfjara Beach, completely bewitched Josh in the early stages of writing his solo debut.

The rework, produced by David Lamin, is a tasteful and restrained investigation of some of the musical and ecological ideas of “Trust”, presented in different scenery; surrounded not by rocks and water, but by a choir of birds.
